Murgese horse breeding
Murgese horse breeding Murgese horse breeding endowed with exceptional morphological and character traits.
History and bloodlines
In the Capurso family, horses have always been there, but it is with Vittorio that the real work of selection begins. He had his brood mares evaluated and approved in the registry office register of Murgese horses and began the work of selection, having them covered by Murgese stallions of his own and those owned by the Istituto di Incremento Ippico di Foggia. The first specimens were certainly smaller in size than the current subjects, suitable for light attacks. If over the years, the advent of tractors, and the arrival of the first cars, meant that the need to use horses in agricultural work and daily life disappeared, the family’s passion for these animals did not diminish, which was also and above all passed on to Giovanni, who has dedicated himself to caring for this wonderful horse breed since childhood.
We currently have a broodstock of about 20 subjects, with all three bloodlines, with a prevalence of Nerone and Araldo delle Murge.
Selection criteria
and objectives
Today, in the absence of a selection system based on genetic indexes, knowing the ancestors f our mares is an important added value for the selection of our subjects. This allows us to gain an in-depth understanding of the morphological and character traits and defects of our specimens, to know which traits our mares transmit, and thus to study the best matings for them. ver the years, we have worked to overcome the defects, fix the merits and select equines that are increasingly reliable, predisposed to contact with humans and confident, choosing breeding subjects not only for their morphological appearance, but also for their character.
We are a public stud station and every year we host one or two stallions owned by the Foggia Equestrian Augmentation Institute for targeted matings.
Our ideal is that the horses at the Capo Iazzo stud farm find a forever family, people who are passionate and ready to commit to a long-term relationship with their horse. For this, we aim to select specimens that are morphologically correct, healthy and characteristically predisposed to a relationship with humans.
Where and how
our horses live
Our herd has about 90 hectares of woodland and pastureland at its disposal, where the horses can move freely.
read lessOurs is a family herd, where there are several generations of mares. Grandmothers, great-grandmothers, nieces, sisters, aunts, mothers and daughters all live together. Male foals are separated after one and a half years of age, with a view to reaching sexual maturity. I puledri maschi, separati dal branco di origine, continuano a vivere in un grande paddock tutti insieme.
In addition to our land, in some periods of the year we move the herd to the land of neighboring farms, which perhaps no longer have animals that can carry out the important activity of cleaning woods and pastures. In this way, in addition to living according to their ethological scheme, the horses of Capo Iazzo play an important role in maintaining the countryside.
The stable
Capo Iazzo has a stable with 13 boxes and a saddlery. There is a sand horse walker, and a 40x80m outdoor arena.
We use the boxes to house subjects that need care or close supervision, and also to accustom foals to being stabled serenely for short periods of time, so that they also have this expertise at their disposal.
The boxes are used for a short time, to acclimatise the horses and make them familiar with this place with a positive connotation. For our animals we always prefer a free life on the Murgia or in large paddocks structured to offer stimulation and meet their species-specific needs.
